The winter season can be a tempting time for shopaholics, since cold weather encourages superfluous purchases of warm clothing items even when you don’t technically need them. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still have access to all the basics in your closet to stay warm and fashionable despite the chilly weather. If you don’t have the following listed items by now, you should consider adding them to your collection to get you through the rest of this cold season. Spring may be on its way soon, but winter isn’t through with us yet.
UGGs are cute, but let’s face it: they probably won’t hold up very well in a blustery snowstorm. Riding boots are a popular trend this season and feature much more practical material for facing cold and wet conditions. Look for a pair of riding boots with a substantial heel, since totally flat boots tend to wear down more quickly and make the boots unwearable once the heel wears through completely. You don’t have to go all out with four extra inches of height, but make sure there’s enough of a platform to keep the boots wearable for at least a few years.
Have you ever been faced with the dilemma of whether you should expose your hands to the cold by removing your gloves to do something as simple as answer your cell phone? If you’re the kind of person who needs to keep your hands warm at all times, fingerless gloves are the perfect compromise for staying warm and fully functional. One of my favorite fashion items for this conflict is the fingerless glove/mitten hybrid, which features a basic pair of fingerless gloves with a cute little cover-up flap for your fingers that secures into place with a button. This allows you to easily keep warm and use your hands with just a moment’s notice.
Scarves and Snoods
Scarves are the ultimate wintertime accessory for adding a fun and colorful flair to any dull outfit. Since your light fall scarves may not be warm enough for outdoor wear, you can maximize your wardrobe by doubling up your scarves for a whole new look that keeps you warmer than ever. Simply lay two lighter scarves on top of one another and tie them as you normally would to perfect this look. Snoods are also chic and effortless accessories for keeping in the heat during the winter. For an extra toasty and unique look, tie your scarf over your head for a classy, high-fashion image.
Putting together a solid winter outfit is typically much more difficult than slipping on a pair of shorts and a cute blouse in the summer, so you want to make sure you come as prepared as possible with all the basic, essential clothing items. The three staples above are a great place to start when it comes to making your wardrobe both practical and pretty. Since these are just supposed to be basic items, make sure to look for classic styles and cuts for now and then move onto the more fun stuff once you establish your closet.
