Ask any parent what the number one difficulty is when it comes to their children and 9 times out of 10, they will say “bedtime”. It seems like a never ending battle of which there is no solution. The good news is that the solution may be as easy as routine and consistency. Here are 8 great ways to try that will help you get your child to go to sleep without the bedtime battle!
1- Be Monotone: During prayers, as you read, when you sing, no matter what you do before bed, be monotone. The boring tone in your voice can become almost hypnotic as you go through your bedtime routine causing your child to get sleepier as you work your way out of their room.
2- Avoid Sugar 2 Hours Before Bedtime: Ahhh good old sugar! Some parents think that a sugar rush then crash is the perfect ending to a long day. But this can have the adverse affect and cause your child to stay awake for hours! Avoid sugar at least 2 hours before bedtime and make saying goodnight a little easier for everyone.
3- Establish a Routine: If you don’t already have one, know that kids thrive off of consistency. Bath, brushing teeth, books, prayers and bed are the order of the evening every night without fail for our son. He knows and relies on this routine and it helps him to know what’s coming so he feels safe and comfy before turning out the lights.
4- Aromatherapy: This was a new one to me, but it is proven that certain smells such as lavender and vanilla calm and sooth. Used in soaps or shampoos, even dabbing these oils lightly on your child’s pillow are all super ways to get your child as calm as possible.
5- Work Out the Wiggles: Start with your child’s toes, then knees, then legs, and so on. Work out the wiggles before bed and teach your kids to relax one body part at a time. It’s fun for them and really works!
6- Use a Soft Noise Maker: White noise or any other type of bedtime sounds work as a trigger for your child. This reminds them consciously and subconsciously that it is time to go to sleep. Remain consistent though, it takes a few weeks for their systems to get the hang of it.
7- Discuss What Your Child Will Dream About: Knock out nightmares before they even have a chance to start! Taking control of your dreams is a great way for your child to keep from worrying about having bad dreams. This works for all ages, simply talk about what you want to dream and walk through to a good, and calm, ending.
8- An Aquarium: There is a reason you see aquariums in doctors and dentist offices. Fish and the motion of swimming cause the body to naturally relax. A lit fish tank in a child’s room is a wonderful way to keep them occupied and relaxed throughout the night.
